If you think about it...they have a lot in common beyond the whole artetype cliche coupling of "geeky guy and headstrong--and sometimes, misunderstandably dark or evil--girl" found in a lot of modern 'toons.

In the show's pilot, it is Gaz that--for some OOC reason--saves Zim from Dib tirade. Even in most episodes when she rains doom upon Dib and Zim, one could see that the rainfalls of doom are more directed at Dib moreso than Zim, for if Dib weren't being a big-headed, paranoid doofus, then he wouldn't be fighting Zim, and thus, Zim would have no reason to retaliate and thusly, the fights would cease to exist (and Gaz would be left alone to do as she would want).

Plus, Gaz and Zim both share a common goal--to destroy pitiful humans (for the humans in the world of Zim are more ignorant and stupid than ever conceived)--and a common threat in both Dib and Tak (they both hate Dib, because Dib is an annoying bother to both of them & they both hate Tak, because Zim wants to be the one to conquer Earth and because Gaz knows that--without the Earth--there would be no videogames or Bloaty's Pizza Hog [and Gaz knows that Tak would be more effective in conquering the world than Zim, hence why she would rather have Zim in control moreso than Tak, for at least Zim would be smart to keep games and pizza around, unless he were to want a painful demise]).

Combine the common goals and threats with the fact that Gaz seemingly tolerates Zim out of most of her "friends" (in Dark Harvest, she willingly let Zim replace an organ with her Game Slave gaming system without dooming him), and you'd probably note that--as a result--Zim probably respects Gaz out of pretty much all of the human filth he's come across, because she allows him to continue with his--admittedly doomed-to-fail--plans of world conquest and even openly encourages the attempts.
